About The Game

Avegost is a Live Action Role Playing game which utilizes the Avegost lore and content to provide a realistic and detailed back-story for its fantasy action. LARPing is similar to tabletop role playing games in that it allows players the opportunity to leave the real world behind and enter a fantasy world where they can immerse themselves away from the stresses of the real world. LARPing is similar to improvisational theatre as well and players within the story play characters that interact with the game and each other. Death is a possibility, but so is the earning of riches and fame. LARPing is the dream game of those individuals who are medieval enthusiasts, role playing junkies, or even actors who enjoy writing their own scripts. Avegost differs from typical LARPs in that it is in our mission statement to continually move towards full immersion.

Avegost holds several events throughout any given year with typically one every month. Each event is held at a campground. Campgrounds represent the in-game world that the characters live within. At an Avegost LARP event you are considered “in-game” from the time “Game On!” is called, on friday night, to the time “Game Off!” is called. Exceptions to this are few and involve bathroom use, injuries, or “Game Stop!”s. What happens in the game-world will always affect your character and you should be aware that your actions in-game will be held against you in-game. Even sleeping is considered to be an “in-game” act so be aware and be prepared. Immerse yourself in your character. Advancing in the game world is easy. Players in attendance receive “Advancement Points” which help their characters grow within the game world and buy more abilities and skills. True advancement however is socially and politically in-game. Players who move the pieces in the game-world and advance the position of their character through roleplay are real achievers.

Getting To Your First Event

Avegost is very easy to join. First, click the "Contact Us" link in the top right and email our staff. We'll get back to you promptly and help you find a ride and get involved. You might also want to click the Facebook symbol at the bottom of the site to join our Facebook group! We'll work on getting you to the next weekend but...what should you expect when you get there?

For your first event you spend the game with the Staff helping to create the story. You get a behind scenes look at the experience and a one-on-one experience with staff members. In many LARPs this is called "Monstering" or "NPCing". Throughout your first weekend you'll stay in an air-conditioned seperate cabin used by the staff and you'll play multiple roles as they are needed. You won't be in-character the whole event and instead will be assisting in the immersion experience for the current players. You'll see the costumes, weapons, armor and learn a lot!

Oh and before we forget- your first event is free!

That's right, free. No other LARP in the state of Georgia offers a free first event but that isn't all, when you return for your next event the following month and play your own character...

Your second event will also be free!

We give you two free events. Your third event, which will be your second as your character, is your first paid event. Its only $30.00 if you pre-pay before the event which is also the cheapest price to LARP in the state of Georgia.

Who Can Play?

Avegost has a very strict requirement that all players in attendance are 18 years old or older. Children under the age of 15, even those who are being watched by their parents, may not attend Avegost LARP events. Avegost is not a family game and has very adult themes common in literature. This means that some aspects of the story being told and the roles being played are not suitable for minors. The reason we do not allow exceptions to this rule is because we do not want to be inhibited as storytellers in what stories we can tell.

Players between the ages of 15-17 may play at Avegost LARP if they are pre-approved by the Game's Owner and have a “mentor”. A mentor is a player who is over the age of 18 and who currently is a member in good standing. The job of the mentor is to make sure that their younger counterpart is responsible, has proper costuming and weaponry, and that they are safe. Thus, the safety of the minor is the responsibility of their mentor.

What makes Avegost different?

Avegost’s mission statement could be to fully immerse players into a event of medieval reenactment using the setting and mythos of Avegost. Avegost’s mythos, unlike that of many LARPs, is not “highly magical” or even “highly fantastic”. Avegost is a much more realistic setting not only inspired by the medieval period but sticking very closely to the example set by it. This distinction as important and can be summed up as the difference in style between the popular video game Elder Scrolls: Obvlion versus the less popular, but entirely realistic, Mount and Blade. Both are very clearly medieval fantasy games with fantastic worlds but Mount and Blade is devoid of magic and thus, devoid of many of the tropes so common to LARP. Avegost does have “magic”, and “spells”, and “mythical creatures” but it has removed them as a major aspect of the game to increase immersion. Highly fanstic worlds by their very nature act against the natural ability for players to be immersed in their characters and this is why the Avegost mythos is so “low fantasy” and “low magic”.

Avegost’s setting is notably different in that regard and for the typical gamer this will require you to flush your mind of the tropes so common in LARP and modern fantasy gaming in order to appreciate the level of realism present at Avegost. Avegost’s focus on immersion however makes it different than many LARPs. Avegost is a full-contact game in which simulation weapons made of foam and pvc piping are used to represent weaponry typical of the medieval time period. Unlike most LARPs Avegost uses latex weapons, a more professional appearing simulation weapon, predominantly and nearly exclusively. Avegost also has shield bashing, shoving, and sometimes tackling. In many LARPs when someone is picked up the person doing so will state “Dragging!” but not in Avegost. In Avegost, an immersive game, you would actually be dragged. This may seem like such a minute detail to someone new to In Avegost, you will be actually dragged. As we remove the presence of game mechanics during the time in which we play we resemble an immersive environment more and more- something that few, if any, LARPs in America can claim. Avegost LARP does not require players to play any time as non-player characters (NPCs) unless they wish to. This practice is uncommon amongst LARPs where “Monster-time” is almost always required. “Monstering” as it will be referred to from here on out, is not a requisite for game-play and while we encourage you to serve time as a monster you will never be plucked from the game to monster unless the game is in dire need of such. Though the policy is sometimes suspended, first time players must serve as a NPC for their entire first game. The reason for this is simple; it allows us as a community to judge if we want to welcome this player into our organization and secondarily it allows the player to acclimate themselves to the game and learn the way things are done before potentially changing the in-game atmosphere for worse. As stated before, after your first event you are never expected to NPC again. A large part of Avegost is the development of the fictional world. Using a system known as “Assets” designed by the Avegost Logistics Team, characters in the fictional world strive to control land, improve it, and establish villages and settlements for themselves on a regional map. This encourages factionalization and group organization. While this does introduce a competitive aspect to the game Avegost does not have prevalent player versus player confrontations.

Finally, Avegost LARP, unlike most LARPs, does feature in-game religions. Religion is an important part of medieval history and we’ve sought to recreate it within the setting. You will likely be required to play a character that believes in religion in some fashion.

You may find, as someone currently playing another LARP or with prior LARP experience, that the aformentioned differences are striking. We have physical contact, no-anachronisms, and are serious about the mythos of the experience and immersing ourselves in it. In our experience many people with prior LARP experience find themselves unable to shake off the shackles of American Style LARPing.
