Avegost is an immense series of literature, images, information and content which has been created by Joseph Landolfi or others as part of the Avegost world. By nature Avegost is therefore similar to Forgotten Realms, Middle Earth, Star Wars, and other unique works because it is a setting which describes an individual and unique world. Avegost is created and maintained by Joseph Landolfi who holds the Avegost content as intellectual property.

After his parents divorce and the beginning of his friendship with Brian Held, Joseph Landolfi was introduced to the Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying game. At that time Joseph was ten years old and the 3.0 edition of Dungeons and Dragons had been released. Having an immediate interest; Joe began to create his own campaign setting for the game. The first Avegost project began as a Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting for a single campaign. The campaign lacked both refinement and originality but was the origin of Joseph's world and all of his writing.

By 2000 the game had undergone singificant change and refinement and was located at the url www.Avegost.co.nr. The game had evolved into an online text based roleplaying forum which worked as a sister site and alternative to the popular yahoo roleplaying website www.Ayenee.com, a site Landolfi was also an administrator on. The game featured a different setting than the current setting of Avegost but had introduced several concepts which would shape Landolfi's vision of Avegost for the future. Single-handedly running the website became a duty however, and Landolfi finally ended the game in 2001 due to frustration and a lack of player interest.

For a period of time Avegost was also featured, using this previous campaign setting, as a persistent world in the video game Neverwinter Nights. The server itself would attract upwards of thirty players but a lack of equipment would cause the server to frequently crash or go down, often running on a schedule. During this period users such as Milton Brown and Rob Palazzo joined the Avegost community.

In May of 2007 with college about to begin and Landolfi moving from his home in Monroe, Michigan to Savannah, Georgia the group who regularly roleplayed with him using Dungeons and Dragons asked for a method to do this online; continuing their traditional gaming. It was devised thanks to Landolfi's knowledge of NWScript and the Neverwinter Night's toolset that the game would continue using Neverwinter Nights as a medium. On Friday May 25, 2007 the first session of Avegost would begin with a new world which had been previously featured in the Dungeons and Dragons campaign which took place throughout 2006 and 2007 in Monroe, Michigan. With a new interest, a few years under his belt, and interested players Landolfi would begin heavily detailing his world.

Since then Avegost has moved to a more "pen and paper" medium by going back to Dungeons and Dragons using 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons rules. However, Avegost is not specific to the Dungeons and Dragons game and may be its own game entirely in the future. Currently, Fantasy Grounds is the medium which is used by online players to play in Landolfi's online campaigns. Avegost is also played at weekly in Savannah, Georgia.

Avegost is heavily influenced by the works of J.R.R Tolkien and his Lord of the Rings series in addition to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Avegost is most influenced by the works of multimedia and film. As a student of history Landolfi also accredits much of his inspiration to actual human history.
